Below articles describe the Asset module and serial number search features introduced in version 5.1.
Note that this is an add on module which is not included in base license.
Assets are not searchable or viewable in web viewer without a valid license with Asset module enabled.
Overview
Asset module contains the following main components:

AssetManager | External data integration module to fetch external properties for an asset eg live data from an IoT solution or service data from a support solution. |
AssetProvider | How to create navigation from the asset to relevant presentations. |
FilterManager | To configure filtering of presentations based on asset. |
Import | Import tools to import assets. |
MyAssets | To view a set of assets connected to an user or organisation. |
PresentationSettings | Define how to view one asset or machine card, its images, properties and data. |
SearchManager | To configure search of assets. |
